Galway is committed to achieving carbon neutrality and environmental sustainability as a Climate Resilient, Biodiversity-rich, and Environmentally Sustainable city by 2050, aligning with the Irish National Climate Action Plan. The city aims to improve energy efficiency by 50 per cent by 2030, as outlined in its City Development Plan and Climate Action strategies. Galway City adopted its Local Authority Climate Action Plan (LACAP) in February 2024, targeting a 51 per cent reduction in emissions by 2030. To reach net-zero emissions, Galway City Council focuses on enhancing building energy efficiency, green procurement, carbon rating for businesses, and nature-based solutions.
